Homeschooling, Am I Doing Enough?

Hey There!

As a homeschooling parent it is hard to figure out if your doing enough. I've had alot of new homeschooling parents ask how do I know if I am doing enough? And there is no right or wrong answer to that question. Homeschool is an individual journey of learning for each child. Some children may be able to do more work than others but what is important is that they are learning. We has homeschoolers want to have children that are life long learners. That means school doesn't end when they graduate. I am a firm believer in the 3 R's in educating your children. As long as your child can read and comprehend you have a life long learner. Children need the basics of reading,  writing and Arithmetic in order to function in life. Everything else comes naturally like science, history etc. I am also a huge advocate for teaching life skills like cooking, laundry,  mowing a yard, and caring for animals. Children will grow to be adults and will need to know life skills to live on their own.....we dont need grown children bringing laundry home !!!😉 As to the question of am I doing enough, I would have the amount of work you give your child suit their learning needs. Sometimes kids have short attention spans and maybe can stay focused for 15 min on a subject. That's fine as long as it was quality work and focus, then only do 15 min. Others may work for an hour and be fine. I know some kids need alot of breaks and that's ok. To homeschool is to find a schedule and system that works for your family. If your overwhelmed then step back focus on the basics and read a story or watch a documentary for history or science. It doesn't have to he complicated. I reccomend Liberty Kids videos for history, The Magic School Bus videos for science, and even Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago for geography. Its educational and stress free.  Let's take the time to learn what our children like and how they like to learn. Love your children and enjoy them because time is short. My oldest will be 18 in June, I wish he was little again. I treasure the moments and years we have homeschooled and I am not done yet I still have a 14 yr old and a 10 yr old....  I've been homeschooling for 12 years and my style and system changes all the time. I hope this helps if you have any questions feel free to ask. GOD BLESS!
